1000CUBED SUMMARY below
The WORDCLOUD below is the first untouched WORDCLOUD created but as expected it overwhelmingly contained the words “DJI”, “Osmo”, “Phone”, “mobile”, “video” & “gimbal” as this is what the product is either called or is.
The WORDCLOUD below is the adjusted version with the words “DJI”, “Osmo”, “Phone”, “mobile”, “video” & “gimbal” excluded, but I included both WORDCLOUDS to keep credibility.
3 different review sites have been amalgamated and the combined percentages presented below.
The reviews are positive with 5 stars representing 76% of the overall reviews. Taking the 4 star and 5 star reviews they account for 91% of the reviews. With the 1, 2 & 3 star reviews making up only 9% of the reviews. Whilst the negative reviews do matter they are insignificant enough not to put any potential purchaser off. It’s clear that the product is nailing it.
DJI have a trustpilot score of 3.1. Link HERE
I’ve went through the first 10 pages of the review and almost without exception the reviews relate to their drones and in particular their customer service and insurance package for their drones.
Reading in-between the lines it seems that reason for the 3.1 Trustpilot score is that purchasers are far more likely to put the effort into complaining than praising. If your product was fabulous why would you waste time going onto a review site. We are all more likely to call a “How is my driving” number after being cut up by a driver, than call to praise some considerate driving. Having said that, the product reviews are overwhelmingly fantastic so you cannot just dismiss the bad reviews because people are more likely to complain. Please bear in mind that the bad trustpilot reviews relate to a completely different product than the one on this page.
I have read other product reviews of the Osmo 4 and interestingly the one feature difference between the Osmo 3 (now discontinued) is the magnetic mount. It is said to have stronger motors to support heavier phones and is itself lighter. Having read 90 reviews the gist I get is that iPhone users will be a more satisfied bunch than Android users. I got the impression that the software/app is aimed at iPhone users who will get more out of the software than an Android user, and therefore will also get a better product experience. Think of it being a bit like 2 people buying the same car but one can only drive their’s on bumpy roads and the other will be driving on smooth roads all day. It will have an effect on your experience of that product. I think one has to differentiate between phone model compatibility and the suitability of the app for android users.
The list of phones which the DJI Osmo 4 is compatible with is available at the following link Compatibility Chart
As a quick ready reckoner the DJI Osmo 4 works with ‘phones up to 290g, and which are a width of 67mm to 84 mm (2.64 inches to 3.3 inches, and a depth of 6.9mm to 10 mm (0.27 inches to 0.4 inches)
Will fit phones measuring diagonal no greater than 196mm (7.72 inches)
The magnetic feature seems to be a talking point. The strength of the magnetic hold is not an issue but external ‘phone cases do make the use of the magnetic cradle obligatory which seemed to urk some people who do not want to take their phone case off in order to use the gimbal.
There does seem to be a lot of chatter about having to practice to get the best out of it but that is to be expected. This is not a negative, simply a comment which seemed to be made alot.
It would definitely be worthwhile looking for an alternative if you are an Android user, or that is the impression I would take away from the reviews, but if you are an iPhone user there doesn’t seem to be any real substantial negative comments. As the 5 star reviews would indicate the product is first rate but do your homework if you are an android user. I found it very difficult to find reviews of alternative gimbals that would give me confidence (as an android user) of the full support of their native app. Having said all that, I am sure that purchasing the Osmo 4 gimbal will improve shot footage even for Android users (above a handheld option), so your shot footage with this gimbal, even allowing for any perceived short comings in the app for Android, will be undoubtedly better.
It gets a green summary and is definitely a product worthy of consideration purely statistically based on the customer reviews of the product.
